Dennis and Iny Schmidtke have been named the grand marshals of North Morristown’s 2022 Fourth of July Celebration.

The Schmidtkes are co-managers of the celebration’s popular beer garden, along with Jeff Spitzack. They’ve also volunteered in the hamburger stand and have helped with the silent auction. They also make and donate multiple homemade pies each year.

“It’s just a one-day celebration, but it takes a lot of people who put in a lot of hours to make it happen every year, and we just do what we can to help,” stated Dennis, who fondly remembers attending the celebration as a child.

“It was our special day of summer—our big day, just to have a day off,” he stated with a chuckle. “There were six of us kids in the family, so there wasn’t much to go around, but we’d each get a little spending money and would spend the day eating and playing games… We’d tear around, play ball, and have fun while our parents volunteered in the hamburger stand and visited with everyone… It was the best day of the year.”

Iny, who was born and raised in Faribault, also has fond memories of North Morristown’s Fourth of July Celebration.

“My friends and I used to go out there when we were teenagers,” she stated. “It was always fun.”

While both Dennis and Iny spent Fourth of Julys in North Morristown in their younger years, it wasn’t until 2000 that their paths finally crossed.

The pair met at the Morristown American Legion where Dennis serves as Commander.

“I was bartending,” Iny shared with a smile.

The couple wed in 2010 and made their home on the Schmidtke family farm, which is located just a few miles from the celebration grounds.

As a boy, Dennis attended Trinity Lutheran School through the eighth grade and went on to graduate from Morristown High School in 1963. After graduation, Dennis helped on the family farm and worked construction until he was drafted into the Army. He served in Vietnam from 1966 until 1967.

He returned to the local area after his honorable discharge and enrolled in State Patrol School in 1969, which led to a 36-year career...
