Show and Tell visits restored historic buildings

The history of two restored buildings in the Montgomery Commercial Historic District came to life on Thursday, Oct. 28 at the Montgomery Historical Society Show & Tell program.

After a social hour, Roger Heyda and Julie Bifano presented the history of the Rustic Farmer and Revival on Main (209 and 213 1st Street South) to a group of more than two dozen people. Starting in the Rustic Farmer, Heyda gave a history of who owned the business in the building and what was sold in the space back in the day. A saloon, general store, and Heyda’s hardware store were some of them.

Heyda pointed out original building lines that have been exposed during Bifano and partner/ owner Scott Stasney’s restoration and pointed out oddities unique to the building’s time period - the brick walls and steel beam.

Bifano said all of the brick and the ceiling had been covered up with other materials when she and Stasney purchased the building in 2017. When they saw the old building’s hidden character, they knew they wanted to bring it back to life.

“We had in our mind we were going to restore the building to its original state,” she said. “We put significant money into reproductions of the original windows with an architectural division of Marvin Windows. I highly recommend them.”

Bifano spoke abou the “Speakeasy” door that leads to the back patio, the type of flooring they used, and the era-equivalent bar that had been purchased at an auction before they bought the building.
