Indoor softball team takes third at state

Despite a hard-luck loss against the tournament’s top-seeded team, New Prague’s indoor softball team rebounded with a big win and captured third-place honors at the state tournament last weekend at Chanhassen High School.

The Trojans opened the tournament with a win over Osseo. They dropped an extra-inning clash against Dakota United before winning the third-place game over St. Cloud. New Prague finished the season at 8-3.

“We were so proud of our team this weekend. They played through adversity, they overcame a tough loss and they all played as a team,” said Julie Holgate, an assistant coach for the Trojans. “The sportsmanship we witnessed was also outstanding. New Prague would be so proud of how our players handled themselves. We will miss our five seniors who led with dignity.”

The team from Burnsville-Farmington-Lakeville won the state tournament with a 7-5 win over Dakota United.

Trojans 8, St. Cloud 4 After a tough loss Friday, June 2, New Prague had to come back and go for third place against a top-seeded team from the north division Saturday afternoon, June 3.

After a scoreless first inning, New Prague entered the scoring column when Shane Fredrick scored off of hits by Lorelei Hamre, Jeffery Teal and Brady Nelson.

In the top of the third inning, Aaron Adamson scored off of a hit by Ray Parker, giving New Prague a two-run lead. St. Cloud came back in the third inning and tied the game. New Prague took the lead in the fourth inning, when John LaFaurie crossed the plate. After a shut out inning, the Trojans added three more runs in the fifth frame.

St. Cloud added a run in the fifth, cutting NPHS’s lead to 7-3. NP added an insurance run in the sixth by Adamson. St. Cloud allowed one more run in the bottom of the seventh, but was able to end the game with a solid win.

New Prague enjoyed another solid game by LaFaurie, who had three hits. Elliot Soukup had four hits and Trystan Seger added three hits.

Dakota United 7, Trojans 6 (8 inns.) The Trojans started out slow from the plate, going scoreless the first three frames of the June 2 semifinal. Dakota United went up by four runs before the Trojans got on the board. New Prague tied the game in the fifth inning. After two scoreless innings, DU won the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Defensively, NPHS played a solid game against the tournament’s top-ranked team. The Trojans’ bats started off slow, but came alive later in the game. Senior John LaFaurie was 4-for-4 and scored four times. Trystan Seger and Ray Parker both had three hits to lead the Trojans.

Dakota United entered the semifinal after a 9-1 win over South Washington County.

Trojans 16, Osseo 1 New Prague opened the tournament in fine fashion Friday night, June 2, allowing only three hits and one run for the Orioles.

New Prague was on fire at the plate. Lead-off hitter, John LaFaurie was 4-for-4. Ray Parker, Elliot Soukup and Shane Fredrich each had three hits.
