Trojans finish off 6-0 week with Zelinski Memorial Championship

It was a perfect week for the New Prague wrestling team last week.

The Trojans opened with a 66-6 Metro West Conference rout of Orono on Thursday, Jan. 20. New Prague followed with five straight wins at the Whitnall Zelinski Memorial Tournament Duals Saturday, Jan. 22. This tourney was wrestled at Greenfield, WI which is just outside of Milwaukee.

“We wrestled fantastic on Saturday and really out wrestled all of our opponents,” head coach Dan Wagner said. “We would win all five matches and none of them were really close or in question.”

In the open pool round, the Trojans defeated Marquette University, 77-6 and Kenosha Bradford/Reuther, 69-6. New Prague picked up eight pins against Marquette, including seven in the first period. Winners by fall were Ian DeGross (220), Lawson Eller (106), Brady Westall (126), Cole Hermann (132), Luke Dorweiler (145), Evan Farley (160), and Evan Anderson (195).

In the win over Kenosha, Eller (113) had a fall in nine seconds and Hermann had a fall in 29 seconds. Also winning by falls were Dorweiler (138), Frank Giesen (182), and Anderson (195).
