WEM senior-to-be Katrina Brekke was selected by the Elysian American Legion Auxiliary (ALA) to attend this year’s Girls State event, which was held June 11 through June 17 at Bethel College.
Brekke said she was very happy to get a chance to go and she received the coveted Spirit Award, which goes to the most cheerful person among the 230 attendees.
She said they interacted with FBI, SWAT members, court judges, and many different government officials, during her week stay.
They were involved in city meetings and one of the things Brekke liked the most were the court trials. She got a chance to act as an attorney who won a case.
“It was fun learning something new every day,” Brekke said. “We get to learn things which you don’t often get to see. I was new to everything at first but it was fun to meet my roommates and make new friends.”
ALA Minnesota Girls State is a diverse group of young women who share a common desire to learn.
From small towns to urban areas, the citizens’ diverse backgrounds add spirit to the program.The purposes of the ALA Minnesota Girls State program are to provide Americanism and good citizenship training and to inform our participants about the duties, privileges, and rights and responsibilities of government as practiced in a democratic society.
Each June, the ALA Minnesota Girls State “citizens” study the Minnesota city, county, and state government processes.
