Elysian City Council member Bobby Houlihan presented a request for funding for the Water Treatment Plant at the Minnesota House Capital Investment Committee’s bonding tour bus stop at South Central College in Mankato on Thursday, October 12.
The city has already received $3.5 million in special appropriation funds this year to be used towards a water treatment plant. They are requesting another 4.86 million through the 2024 bonding bill.
According to Houlihan, the city needs this water treatment plant in order to treat community drinking water for Radium, Manganese, and Iron Bacteria. Further infrastructure is needed to transport water from well No. 2 to Well No. 3 to the water treatment plant.
Infrastructure would be needed to transport clean drinking water back to the water tower for distribution.
Both radium and manganese levels in the raw well water exceed limits set by the federal drinking water standards. These standards are enforced by the Minnesota Department of Health.
