“Since the legalization of marijuana passed the legislature there has been a scramble to enact laws and ordinances pertaining to its use, growing, transportation and possession. Most municipalities in the area have chosen to enact a conservative approach to the aforementioned. State laws will be maintained, but the state legislation has given each municipality options into how they want to govern themselves. Through the multiple meetings leading up to August 1, 2023, everyone is expecting changes to the original language in the bills. It is my belief that municipalities will amend their ordinances accordingly,” said Montgomery Police Chief Nathan Hintz.
Some of the scramble to regulate comes out of some of the issues of being able to control and effectively enforce any sort of cannabis use. Both the cities of Lonsdale and Montgomery posed the thought that there isn’t a good way to test for someone under the influence of cannabis nor if they are consuming them in a prohibited place, which is especially true with edibles and drinks infused with cannabis products.
The market isn’t a free-for-all though with legalization. So, what is currently legal and what is actually available?
State Issued Cannabis Limits
Age limit
All parties that wish to purchase, possess, use and/or grow cannabis in some form must be 21-years-old or older.
Possession limits
Personal public possession, transport and gifting (no non-registered business sales are allowed) - Up to two ounces of cannabis flower, eight grams of cannabis concentrate and 800 mg of edible cannabis products.
