Dad's winning pumpkin

For 15 years, the Moser family has held a pumpkin-growing contest, and never, never before, has Jason Moser's name graced the coveted traveling pumpkin trophy... until now.
Jason Moser of Montgomery won his extended family contest by growing a whopping 551-pound pumpkin in his backyard.
"We're always trying to beat dad or grandpa," Moser laughed. "But, it isn't easy. My dad doesn't get beat very often."
Moser's dad, who lives in Roseau, is good at growing pumpkins and has produced many a big gourd over the years, but the younger Moser is proving to be a good competitor.
"I've only really tried the last three years, and last year, my largest pumpkin was only 185 pounds, so I definitely did better this year," laughed Moser. "I did things a little different--lots of water and you have to manage the patch."
Moser's prize-winning pumpkin was grown from the seed of a winning pumpkin that weighed over 1,000 pounds.
"The seed came from my dad's neighbor, who grew a 1,027 pound pumpkin last year," he explained. "The seed that grew my pumpkin came from that pumpkin, so I guess you could say it came from a good blood line. It's similar to the Atlantic Giant, but it's some kind of hybrid."
