Miss Czech Slovak looking for candidates
The Miss Czech Slovak Minnesota Pageant is looking for queen and junior ambassador candidates for its 37th annual event.
Mary Ann and Roger Heyda couldn’t imagine anyplace else they might have been Sunday besides at Moly Holy Redeemers’ festival. A warm sunny day and bright sunshine made the festival a delightful option for the day.
Tri-City United held its homecoming coronation ceremony Monday, Sept. 25, at TCU High School in Montgomery.
Motorists from New Prague, Montgomery and the area who use use Highway 21 through Jordan, the Minnesota Department of Transportation announced today the Highway 21 and County Road 66/Sawmill Road roundabout in Jordan will fully open at 5 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29.
Crews began building the $3.06 million roundabout project June 12, resulting in a total closure of Highway 21, Sawmill Road and County Road 66 at the intersection. Sawmill Road access reopened Sept. 1.
TCU named the candidates for its homecoming queen and king coronation this afternoon at a pep fest at the school. Voting for the homecoming queen and king honors is slated for Monday, Sept. 25, during the school day. Coronation evening is Monday evening, 7 p.m.

Public health workers in Scott and Le Sueur counties are encouraging people who haven’t recently been vaccinated to consider receiving the latest vaccines aimed at minimizing the impacts of COVID and fighting its spread.
The Tri-City United swimmers won events for the Titans in a dual swim meet Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Albert Lea.
Senior Mallorie Plut won the 200-yard IM in a time of 2:41.57 and the 100-yard butterfly in 1:12.79.
Sophomore Lily Traxler captured the one-meter diving title with a score of 160.60.
Sophomore Ella Schmiesing won the 100- yard freestyle in 54.97, which was 18 seconds faster than the runner-up. She also won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.66, which was 15 seconds in front of the runnerup.
Albert Lea defeated TCU, 104-77 in the varsity meet.
Whether it was the inability to cover the cost or not being able to deal with the matter, there’s something left unattended when Will Urtuzuastegui thinks of his younger sister’s tragic death. Wednesday, he hopes to take steps toward bringing closure to the matter.
Urtuzuastegui’s younger sister, Mary, was killed in a crash a decade ago on Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2013. She was one of four who perished in the crash on a curve on County Road 26 (NW Lexington Road) three miles west of Montgomery. Though it is marked, her gravesite has no headstone on it, a void he wants to fill.
Austin Kristiansen, 21, of Le Center, passed away the afternoon of Saturday, September 9 from injuries received while riding his dirt bike at the Meadow Valley Motocross Track in rural Wabasha County in southeastern Minnesota.
At approximately 1:10 p.m., the Wabasha County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call to an accident at the track. “It’s just a tragic thing. The way it went down. He crashed his bike and he was talking when we arrived and then ambulance took him away,” said Wabasha County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Jim Warren.
Austin S. Kristiansen, 21 years old of Le Center, Minn., passed away suddenly of injuries suffered at Meadow Valley MX Park in Millville, Minn., Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023.
In addition to the Montgomery Fire Department (MFD) raising the United States Flag on the ladder of one of their fire engines on 9/11 in Memorial Park, four members of the department also participated in a 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb at Lambeau Field in Green Bay, Wisconsin, on September 9.
Team Captain Sean Benz, along with Doug Woodgate, Josh Sivongxay and Travis Rose, headed to our rival stadium in honor of all fallen firefighters and the 343 that perished on 9/11.
Tri-City United sophomore Grant Fitterer was the leading runner for the Titan boys cross country team during two early season events.
Fitterer placed third last week at the St. Peter Meet, running the 5,000-meter course in 18:50.
He improved on that time during the 26 team Gerry Smith Invitational Thursday, Sept. 7 at the Montgomery National Golf Club. He improved his time to 17:56 in placing 41st among 202 total runners.
The annual Halfway to St. Patty’s Day celebration this past weekend was a family-fun event.
Kids enjoyed barrel-train rides, playing in a bounce house, and games complete with prizes. The kids-at-heart and of any age could partake in the daily offerings of music through most of the festivities, fireworks at dusk on Saturday, the vehicles on display at the car show Sunday, or any number of food and beverage options available.
The Tri-City United volleyball team won three of their five matches to win the consolation championship at the WEM Invitational Saturday, Sept. 9.
In pool play, the Titans had a 25-14, 25-23 loss to WEM, a 27-25, 25-16 win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran, and a 23-25, 25-19, 15-6 loss to Cleveland.
Cleveland went on to defeat Nova Classical Academy to capture the overall championship.
TCU played in the four-team consolation bracket where they defeated St. Clair 25-11, 25-20 and Minnesota Valley Lutheran 28-26, 26-24.

Georgina Beatrice Barta, age 99, of Montgomery, passed away Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023 at Mala Strana Health Care in New Prague. Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 14 from 9:30 -11 a.m. at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery with Memorial Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 a.m. with Fr. Tom Niehaus officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery.
Charles E Kasper, 88 of Montgomery passed away Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023, at his home. Visitation was held Friday, Sept. 8, 2023, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery and one hour prior to service on Saturday, Sept. 9, 2023 at the church. Funeral was held on Sept. 9, 2023, at 11 a.m. at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery. Military honors where provided by the Montgomery area Honor Guard.
