Montgomery’s annual Torchlight Parade and Fireworks celebrates its 30th anniversary this holiday season on Thursday, Dec. 1, and according to event organizers, plans are underway to make it bigger and better than ever.
Santa and his live reindeer will be near the intersection of Vine Avenue and First Street (between American Family Insurance and Frandsen Bank and Trust), starting at 5:30 p.m. Characters from “Frozen” will also be available for photos for no charge.

For more than a decade, the Ernstes have spearheaded a nomination-based, wishgranting program called Earnest Effort Christmas Wish to provide extra cheer to local individuals and families in need with the help of many generous and anonymous donors.
Last year, Earnest Effort Christmas Wish granted more than 30 wishes. This year, it will likely be more.
Montgomery Police Chief Nathan Hintz swears in officer Kyle Sladek at Monday evenings city council meeting. Hintz said the department is looking to add 1-2 additional part time officers still to the force.

Two vehicles collided Thursday morning shortly before 8 a.m. on icy roads between New Prague and Montgomery.
The accident occurred just south of Minnesota 13 and 300th Street South. According to the Minnesota State Patrol report, a 2009 Ford Explorer driven by Robert Shippman of New Prague and a 2002 Oldmobile Bravada driven by Katie Young of Buffalo ended up in the west ditch. Young was taken by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health Systems in New Prague with non-life threatening injuries. Shippman sustained no injuries. Both parties were wearing their seat belts.
Montgomery voters chose to elect Zack Matson and Mick McGuire to the Montgomery City Council. Matson led with 645 votes, followed by McGuire with 569. Dennis Smith received 428 votes. Daniel Siebsen received 391 votes. Brad “Butch” Kubes will also be joining the Montgomery City Council after earning 636 votes. His opponent for the seat, Dennis Lambrecht, received 520 votes.
Fire broke out at a Northeast 9th Avenue, Lonsdale, residence on Thursday night, Nov. 3. No one was injured in the blaze.
According to Lonsdale Fire Chief Dave Pfluke, the fire was reported by a neighbor at 6:34 p.m., and firefighters were at the scene in under 10 minutes.
“The attached garage was fully engulfed when we arrived, and thankfully the family was already out of the home,” Pfluke stated. “We did rescue a couple of their pets—the ones the family weren’t able to grab on their way out. So, everyone—even their pets—did make it out okay.”

Six-year-old Artemis Anderson and sister, four-year-old Athena, are school girls by day, but on Friday night, they were ninjas.
The daughters of Tiffany Anderson were two of the several hundred people to attend the Family Fun Night community event put on by TCU - Montgomery Parent and Teacher Organization ( PTO), Friday, Sept. 30.
Anderson volunteered at the event last year and returned with her girls this year because she loves to see them have fun, burn off some energy, and interact with their friends outside of the classroom.
New stop-arm cameras and interior cameras have been installed on all 27 of the big yellow school buses that transport Tri-City United students.
A vehicle crashed into the Casey’s General Store building in Montgomery around 8 a.m., Wednesday morning, October 5.
According to the incident report, the Montgomery Police were alerted to the incident at 8:08 a.m. and an officer was dispatched to the scene.

Tri-City United High School crowned its Homecoming King and Queen during a ceremony on Monday night, Oct. 3.
The new king and queen are Henry Schendel and Rhia Krautkremer.
Queen Rhia is the daughter of Matthew and Denise Krautkremer.
King Henry is the son of Jim and Amy Schendel.
Last year’s Homecoming King and Queen, Brendan O’Keefe and Madison Dooley, had the honor of crowning the new royals.
