Joan Frances Glisczinski, age 80 of rural Belle Plaine, died on Saturday, February 13, 2021 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN. Mass of Christian Burial will be on Friday, February 19, 2021, 11:00 a.m. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, New Prague, MN. Burial will follow at St. John the Evangelist Cemetery, Union Hill, MN. Visitation will be on Thursday, February 18, from 4:00 p.m. ~ 8:00 p.m. at the Kolden Funeral Home in Belle Plaine, MN. Visitation will continue Friday morning at the funeral home in Belle Plaine from 8:30 a.m. until about 10:15 a.m.

Hunter LeCuyer, a student at St. Wenceslaus School and volunteer at the annual St. Wenceslaus Soup Supper on Monday, Feb. 15, was among those letting people know they had sold out. A total of 316 quarts of soup, which were chicken noodle, vegetable beef and chili, were prepared and were sold off in 90 minutes. This year’s supper began around 3:45 p.m. and was take out only due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Revenue from the soup supper will be split between St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church and St. Wenceslaus School. For more see an upcoming print issue of The New Prague Times.

Per Governor Walz today, effective Saturday, February 13 at noon, further steps to reopen Minnesota’s economy safely, are listed below.
·        Increasing the “not to exceed” capacity in restaurants to 250, while leaving the maximum capacity at 50 percent
·        Increasing indoor entertainment “not to exceed” capacity to 250, while leaving the maximum capacity at 25 percent
·        Increasing private events and celebrations “not to exceed” capacity to 50, while leaving the maximum capacity at 25

Members of the New Prague Fire Department were busy cooking up 800 halves of chicken on Friday, Feb. 12, at the Knights of Columbus Hall as part of their annual chicken dinner. Firefighters started cooking at 12:30 p.m. The extra smoke was due to temperatures at -5 degrees Fahrenheit and keeping the cooking area closed up for warmth. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic this year’s dinners were pre-sold and would all be take out meals that would include chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, bread and cake. The department had set up a drive through area for those picking up their meals between 5-7 p.m.

The Minnesota Twins have named New Prague High School Vice Principal Tom Wetschka an Education Hero for the month of February.
The Minnesota Twins’ program is to support and celebrate education professionals, teachers, administrators, and volunteers in Twins Territory. Twins fans can nominate an Education Hero by sharing a story describing how a person has gone above and beyond, advanced social equity, and supported children in their education.

Let me begin this by saying I apologize if I came across as too flippant in last week’s piece. February is Black History Month and it is a time to take a deeper look at the inventions, accomplishments and contributions of our fellow Americans. For me personally there is journalist Ida B. Wells, who fought for civil rights both for women and Blacks.

Caroline Pelant, age 89 of Northfield / Lonsdale, passed away Thursday morning, February 11, 2021, at Three Links Care Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:00PM, Saturday, February 13, 2021, at the Church of St. Dominic, Northfield.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Masks are required and the funeral home will assist with social distancing.  Interment will be in Annunciation Cemetery, Hazelwood.
 
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the donor’s choice.

According to KEYC New Prague Times News of Mankato Brooklyn Russell, 16, of New Prague, was among two people injured in a two-vehicle crash the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 9, in Sibley County. The other person injured was Dean Dardis, 62, of Faribault.
The Sibley County Sheriff’s Office said it responded to the crash at the intersection of 336th Street, or Sibley County Road 8, and 337th Lane. The crash site was approximately one mile west of the city of Le Sueur.

Rebecca “Becky” L. Brahee, age 59, of Cologne passed away on Monday, February 1, 2021 in Cologne.
A Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
Rebecca “Becky” Lucille Schmitz was born September 7, 1961 in New Prague, MN the daughter of LeRoy and Verena (Sand) Schmitz.  She graduated from New Prague High School in 1981.  In 2010, Becky was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart.

New Prague City Utility workers cut into the street near the intersection of Pershing Avenue NE and Fourth Street NE the morning of Monday, Feb. 8, to get to a water main break. The break likely happened where the water main and a fire hydrant connect. The subzero temperatures from the past few days likely caused the break. Raymond J. Jaeckels, age 78, of Northfield, passed away Friday, February 5, 2021, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. 
Raymond was born January 5, 1943, in Duelm, MN, the son of Henry and Hilda (Wegman) Jaeckels. At the age of 15, he moved south to Bloomington, Minnesota and this was the beginning of a 60-year career in the water well drilling business. He was united in marriage to Grace Stauffeneker on March 10, 1962. They made their home outside of Northfield where they raised their four children.
