George Frank Trnka, 89, of Montgomery, died on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Mala Strana in New Prague. Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 9am to 11am at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Montgomery. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11am with Father Victor Valencia officiating. Interment will be held at Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery. Military honors will be provided by the Montgomery Area Veterans Honor Guard. 

The Tri-City United Titan Football Team advanced in the Section 3AAA tournament after their 54-20 victory over the Worthington Trojans in Montgomery on Tuesday.
 
With their win, the Titans, a No. 3 seed with a 5-4 record, take to the road for Jackson County to face Jackson County Central in the semi-final round on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Huskies, which are No. 2 seed, enter the contest with an 8-1 record after beating Sibley East 42-8 on Tuesday.
 

For week eight and the final regular game of the football season, the Titans were victorious on their home turf when they beat the St. Peter Saints 19-6 on Wednesday.
 

Marlene “Gussie” Emmers, 80, passed away on October 14, 2018, at Methodist Hospital after an eight-year battle with kidney failure and being on dialysis. Visitation will be on Wednesday, October 17, 2018, from 9 to 10 a.m. with Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. all at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Le Center. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Le Center.
 

John Lawrence Fiala, 92, of Lincoln, NE, passed away September 27, 2018, in Omaha. Born on January 9, 1926, in Raymond to Jerome and Bessie (Kratochvil) Fiala. John, a US Navy veteran, worked in Claims as an administrator at State Farm Insurance for many years, retiring in 1989.
 
He was very proud of his Czech heritage and was a co-founder of the Miss Czech-Slovak US Pageant. He served in many different organizations: Czech Language Foundation, Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences, past president of the NE Czech's of the Panhandle, and NE Czech's Inc.

A two-vehicle accident sent a New Prague man to a local hospital on Monday, Oct. 15.
 
Kyle Pecholt, 24, was taken by Montgomery Ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System Hospital after his 2015 Ford Fusion collided with a 2000 Kenworth Tractor Semi around 11:18 a.m. The crash occurred at the intersection of Highway 13/21 and County Road 28, north of Montgomery. 
 
The driver of the semi was Bruce Edward Lepage, 64, of Tomah, WI. He  was listed as wearing his seatbelt and not injured. Pecholt was also wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash.
 

The Tri-City United Titans were on the road to Marshall on Friday for week seven of the football season. The Marshall Tigers, entering the contest with a 6-0 record, soundly defeated the Titans 54-7.
 
The Titans next action will be against St. Peter on Wednesday, Oct. 17 in Montgomery. It will be senior night for the Titans who are co-sponsoring Tackle Cancer Night with the Saints. The Saints will enter the contest after losing 13-42 to the Waseca Bluejays on Friday.
 
The Tigers’ record improves to 7-0. They take on Jordan next Wednesday.

Three men were arrested in Montgomery and charged with numerous felony charges after a yearlong investigation into drug use and sales.
 
Le Sueur County Sheriff Brett Mason reported that on Tuesday Oct. 9, 2018, shortly after 7 a.m., the Cannon River Drug and Violent Offender Task Force (CRDVOTF) executed two search warrants in the 700 block of Mill Avenue NE, Montgomery. 
 

Julitta “Jule” Franke, 90, of Montgomery, passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018 at Mayo Clinic Health System New Prague.
Funeral services will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 10 at 10 am. with visitation from 9 am to 10 am at the church.  Visitation will be on Tuesday, October 9 from 4 to 8 pm at Schoenbauer Funeral Home in Montgomery. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Montgomery.

With less than a minute to go and a tied game of 14-14, Tri-City United won their homecoming game against the Albert Lea Tigers 14-17 with a 22-yard field goal. Matthew Bartholomew provided the winning kick. The victory elicited cheers from the stands packed with fans and a special homecoming fireworks finale. For more, see the print edition.

Most Holy Redeemer fourth grader Max Budin, son of Mike and Angie Budin, won Montgomery's 2018 Torchlight Parade Button Design Contest. Torchlight committee members Neaner Kriha and Lynn Heinzig made the announcement Thursday morning, Oct. 4. Budin's winning design features a North Pole sign and snow. According to Kriha, this design will be used as the theme of this year's parade float. Budin won a pizza party for his class and will be invited to ride on the Torchlight Parade float.

Millicent C. (Turek) Andrist, age 96, formerly of Erin Township, Minnesota, died Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at home surrounded by her family. 
 
Her funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Beverly, Massachusetts on November 21, 2017. 
 
Burial will take place at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Montgomery Minnesota at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 20, 2018. Family and friends are invited to the American Legion Post #79 at 12 p.m. in Montgomery for light refreshments and to celebrate Millicent’s life.
 

The Tri-City United Volleyball Team added four more losses to its 2018 record.
According to the Minnesota State High School League, on September 25, the Titans lost to Medford in three sets 4-25, 10-25, and 21-25.
On September 27, the Titans fell to Norwood-Young America in three sets 9-25, 12-25, and 13-25.
On Saturday, the Titans held an invitational and lost to Cleveland in two sets, and Holy Family Catholic. Against Cleveland, the scores were 25-17 and 14-25. Against Holy Family, the scores were 13-25 and 25-20.

Wear, tear and years of water leaks from the bell tower and deteriorating mortar in parts of St. John Lutheran Church have forced its congregation to take action.
On September 12, the church’s congregation unanimously approved a proposal for the Building Restoration Corporation out of Roseville to visually inspect the tower’s exterior to determine the exact causes for the church’s leaks.

For the second year in a row Lonsdale’s city tax rate is staying the same.
At the Lonsdale City Council meeting held on September 29, the council approved a resolution setting the 2019 preliminary city budget and property tax levy.
“We’re pretty much at the same levy as we were in 2017,” said Lonsdale City Administrator Joel Erickson.
Despite the property tax rate, which is set at 17.64 percent, the same as in 2018, this does not mean residents will not see a change in their city portion of their tax rate.

Due to the significant amount of property and agricultural damage after the Sept. 20 storm, the Le Sueur County Board has entered into a resolution which will help county residents.
The commissioners declared Le Sueur County in a State of Emergency Sept. 24 for the high wind storm event of Sept. 20.
During the Oct. 2 meeting, the county board signed a resolution which will waive zoning permit fees and grant administrative variances.
The resolution deals with affected properties as documented in the damage assessment from the storm damage.
