The Minnesota River boys hockey team picked up a pair of Big South Conference wins last week, outscoring their two opponents 14-1.
The Bulldogs won three of their five games, including a 7-1 win over Worthington Saturday, Jan. 14 and 8-0 over winless Redwood Valley Saturday, Jan. 21. The locals also defeated Mound Westonka 5-3 Monday, Jan. 16. Minnesota River also dropped a 5-2 nonconference game to Litchfield/DasselCokato Saturday, Jan. 21 and 7-2 to Big South leading New Ulm Tuesday, Jan. 17.
Two TCU High School Robotics teams and five TCU Middle School Robotics teams competed at the Titans’ home tournament on Saturday, Jan. 14. A total of 45 teams competed in the tournament.
In the high school division, TCU’s teams Gear Train and Barbie Bots made it to the eliminations round. Gear Train earned a ranking of 25th (3-4-0). Barbie Bots team was ranked 30th (3-4-0).
The Minnesota River Bulldogs 12U Girls Hockey, ages 12 and under, were surprised in Woodbury on a very snowy January 3. The girls expected to arrive playing a typical game against the Woodbury 12U B1 team. All other TCU and area schools activities were cancelled this day because of an ongoing winter storm. This game, however, was not cancelled.
It was one win and one loss for the TCU girls basketball team during their home tournament held Dec. 29 and 30 in Montgomery.
The Titans were defeated by Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, 67-45 on Thursday. They came back to defeat JWP, 54-51 Friday evening. WEM was the only team in the tourney who were undefeated.
Sophomore Sophie Whipps scored 10 points off the bench and Ella Schmeising added nine points against the Buccaneers.
The TCU boys basketball team extended their home winning streak to three straight after winning both games in the TCU tournament Dec. 29 and 30.
The Titans defeated WEM, 68-49, Thursday and came back the following day to defeat JWP, 55-40.
The boys did not come out of the gate swinging, as they had somewhat of a slow start. against WEM. Going into halftime leading by only 1 point, the game continued to be an absolute battle until about halfway through the second half.
The TCU girls basketball team trailed Sibley East by one point at halftime of their Dec. 20 Minnesota River Conference (MRC) game.
The Titans put together a great second half, outscoring the Wolverines by 16 in the second half to pick up a 51-36 win. It was their second MRC win and moved them into fourth place in the conference.
Tri-City United’s Robotics teams dove into the competition season by recently participating in two, back-toback tournaments.
Mankato Tournament
Eight TCU Robotics teams competed in the Mankato Robotics Tournament on Dec. 16. Five of the participating Titan teams hailed from the middle school and three from the high school.
Layne Wilbright, TCU community education coordinator, said that a total of 16 competed from TCU at the Special Olympics Bowling competition, up from 8-9 that typically competed before. The competition took place at AMF Southdale Lanes in Bloomington on Nov. 12. All members competed in the ramp singles category.
Team members received certificates for their achievement at the school board meeting Dec. 12. The school board congratulated each of them and shook each of their hands.
The Tri City United boys basketball team opened their season with a split of two Minnesota River Conference games. The Titans dropped their opener Tuesday, Dec. 13 to Norwood-Young America, 69-56. Three days later the Titans edged Le Sueur-Hendeson, 57-53.
The Tri City United girls basketball team picked up their first two wins of the season last week, evening their season record at 2-2. After a 57-29 loss to Norwood-Young America (NYA) Tuesday, Dec. 6, the Titans got their first win Thursday, Dec. 8 with a 62-27 victory over Medford and their second win with a 56-41 victory over Le Sueur-Henderson Friday, Dec. 9. Minnesota River girls hockey goalie Annika Magelee recorded a shutout Saturday, Dec. 10, leading her Bulldogs to a 7-0 win over Worthington. Magelee stopped all eight shots and five different players scored goals to help the Bulldogs improve to 3-2 in the Big South Conference and 5-4 overall. Tri City United freshman Ella Schmiesing had the goal of advancing to the finals in both of her races at the Class A State Swimming and Diving Meet which was held last week at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
These goals were met as she advanced to the finals in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard freestyle races.
“Ella swam strong in her races,” head coach Kristen Munden said. “She had met her goals and ended up on the podium.”
The Tri City United volleyball team finished up a busy week by tying for third place in the eight-team Titan Invitational held Saturday in Montgomery.
The Titans played five total matches during the week. They defeated by Sibley East in five sets Tuesday, Sept. 27 by scores of 25-17, 25-23, 25-21, 25-15, and 15-8. Thursday, Sept. 29 the Titans swept Le Sueur Henderson in their annual “Pink Out” where the packed crowd was there is support of senior middle blocker Kaia Krocak’s family.
TCU senior Dante Juberian placed third in the New Prague Cross Country Invitational which was held Tuesday, Sept. 27.
Juberian completed the 5,000-meter course in 17:20, which was close behind runner-up Kaleb Sharp of Jordan (17:03) and champion Andrew Macheel of Buffalo (16:34).
The TCU boys placed eighth in the nine-team invitational with 172 points. Buffalo was the boys team champion with 59 points. They were followed by New Prague (65), Jordan (87), Waconia (87), Red Wing (142), Sibley East (163), Norwood-Young America (171), TCU, and Le Sueur-Henderson (248).
