Donald A. “45” Nickolay, age 68, of Elko New Market, died Monday, March 22, 2021 with his wife at his side after a brief illness at University of Minnesota Hospital. Don was born on July 27, 1952 in New Prague to Francis J. and Lorraine L. (Shimota) Nickolay. He attended St. Wenceslaus School, graduated from New Prague High School, and attended Faribault Vocational-Technical School in welding. He married the love of his life, LuAnn R.

Shirley J. Meyer, age 95, of New Prague, died peacefully, with her family at her side on Sunday, March 21, 2021 at St. Francis Regional Medical Center. Shirley was born on October 11, 1925 in Wheatland Township, Rice County, MN to Theofil M. and Bessie (Novak) Kajer. She attended St. Wenceslaus School and graduated from New Prague High School. She married Donald E. Meyer on November 9, 1946 at the St. Wenceslaus Rectory in New Prague. Shirley’s faith was always a central part of her life and she was active at St.

This month marks one year that the world has been dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. There has been changes in that year that has affected all of our lives from work to school to how we spend our free time. Thankfully there are now several vaccines that are helping us get back to more of a sense of normal.
The New Prague City Council unanimously approved the first reading for an ordinance amendment that pertains to allowing an indoor firing range. City Planning Director Ken Ondich presented the amendment at the council’s electronically held Monday, March 15, meeting.

Nick Novak has been named to the 2021 MWCA All-State Academic Wrestling Team. This team consists of some of the state’s best wrestlers who are also great students. This group of student-athletes has won 23 state titles, over 4,400 matches, and an astounding 82% winning percentage. Each year, the MWCA seeks the state’s top wrestlers, who are also great students. The 28 wrestlers selected this year were from a pool of 145 wrestlers nominated across the state by members of the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association.
Gladys R. Eilers, age 77, of New Prague, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 16, 2021 at King’s Way in Belle Plaine. Gladys was born on December 7, 1943 in New Prague to Leonard and Christine (Wolf) Nytes. She was born and raised in the Union Hill area, attending Le Sueur County District School and was a 1961 graduate of New Prague High School. Gladys married Donald W. “Fuzzy” Eilers on April 12, 1980 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Union Hill and the two were pretty inseparable ever since! She was a member of St. John’s Parish Catholic Aid Association and then St.
Scott Dale Mischke, age 53 of Elko New Market passed away at his home after losing his 4 year fighting battle with prostate cancer on March 13th, 2021. Preceded in death by his loving parents; Duaine and Janice Mischke; uncle, Jim Jenkins and grandparents; Ken and Gloria Jenkins (Worthington, MN). Survived by wife, Debra; children, Nathan Mischke, Linzey (Josh) Stocker, and Miles Mischke; granddaughter, Raelyn; siblings, Cindy (Kevin) Burns, Leeland (Jayne) Mischke, Kevin Mischke, and many nieces and nephews.
Due to inclement weather, New Prague Area Schools will be releasing High School Students at 12:35 p.m. and Middle School Students at 12:45 p.m. today, Monday, March 15, 2021.
There will be no afternoon preschool and no evening activities.

Evelyn Trcka, age 102 of Shieldsville passed away peacefully on Thursday March 4, 2021 at Pleasant Manor in Faribault. Visitation will be held Monday, March 22, 2021 from 3 – 7 pm at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Shieldsville and will continue Tuesday morning 9:30 – 11 am. Mass of Christian burial will be held Tuesday, March 23, 2021 at 11 am with Fr. Thomas Niehaus officiating. Interment will be held in St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Shieldsville.
The New Prague girls basketball team picked up their first win of the season Tuesday, March 2.
The Trojans ended a 13-game losing streak by defeating Mound Westonka, 70-56.
The win is flip-flop of their game on Feb. 5 when M-W defeated the Trojans, 70-58.
Hannah Wedeking continues to led the offense, scoring 32 points and had 11 rebounds and six assists. Hatlevig scored 13 points and Avery Hennen added 10 points.
