Even though Mother Nature dumped more than a half of an inch of much-needed rain on the afternoon of Saturday, June 24, it didn’t deter people from attending the annual Fireman’s Relief Dance later in the day and into the night.
Fire Chief Kenny Pavek said, “The dance went well considering the weather we had Saturday. We had some storms come through just as Charlie Sticha had started playing. We had to do a few repairs on tents, and it rained for about an hour, keeping the crowd away. After the rain, the weather was alright, but the crowd was down from years past.”
Kolacky Days held a festive Meet and Greet event Monday evening, introducing the Grand Marshall for this year’s event and a chance to get to know the current and competing royalty.

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) has issued an air quality alert for central and southern Minn., effective from noon on Tuesday, June 20, through 9 p.m. on Thursday, June 22. The affected area includes central and southern Minn., and the tribal nations of Leech Lake, Mille Lacs, Upper Sioux, and Prairie Island.
The Department of Minnesota Veterans of Foreign Wars and its Auxiliary held their annual convention June 8-12 in Plymouth, MN. The VFW and VFW Auxiliary members attended various training seminars and program information sessions. Various Minnesota veterans homes showcased their facilities. A joint awards session and a joint memorial service brought members of the VFW family together during the five-day event.
The Montgomery Police Department invites the public to come tour the new police department building on Saturday, June 17 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Visit with and ask questions to police department staff, and tour areas of the building that will be off-limits after the building is in use. You can also enjoy some coffee and donuts while you tour the facility.
The new building is directly behind or north of the old police building, on the opposite side of the block, at 300 Lexington Avenue NW.
MISSING PERSON ALERT: The Prior Lake Police Department is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a missing teen. Keira Dupey, age 13, is 5 feet, 4 inches tall, weighs 100 pounds and has black/brown hair and brown eyes. Dupey was last seen on May 25 leaving a facility in Prior Lake with Kari Steele, who is also a missing person. Dupey may have traveled to St. Paul or the surrounding suburbs.
Late in the month of April, many students from Tri-City United Schools Future Farmers of America (FFA) team headed to the State FFA Convention, April 23-25. Some of those students placed very well among their competitors around the state, including two taking home first place awards.
Samantha Tiede, Class of 2023, took home first place for an original song she wrote and performed in the talent category. She was able to play and sing the song she wrote in front of the entire group at Williams Arena, which was also broadcast on the arenas large led billboard.
The theme of the final band and choir concert of the 2022- 2023 school year was The Magic of Music, in relevance to Disney and their mid-winter trip to perform there.
Songs ranged from “You’ll Be In My Heart” and “The Family Madrigal” to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” to “How to Train Your Dragon.” The night ended with some senior recognition and the live concert band playing against a movie of different Disney scenes put together by band student Aidan Miland.
A new set of three wings for the Wings Walk Art Project was placed upon American Legion Post 79 on Thursday, May 26.
The wings are a part of the 2022 Paint the Town grant that was applied for through the Southern Minnesota Initiative Foundation by Tri-City United Schools. It has been a community collaboration between the school, Montgomery Area Community Club, American Legion Post 79, VFW Post 5340, and other community members.
With the Tri-City United gymnasium in full attendance on the evening of Friday, May 26, the Class of 2023 walked in processional to the classic “Pomp and Circumstance” by the concert band. The posting of colors by the Montgomery Honor Guard and then the national anthem by concert band and choir.
Principle Alan Fitterer welcomed the entire group and Kaia Krocak gave a student welcome speech. Senior Danessa Buckingham directed the concert choir singing the Alan Menken piece, “Go the Distance.”
Rice County officials are continuing to respond to a fire at the county’s landfill solid waste facility at East 145th Street in rural Dundas. The fire began in the landfill portion of the solid waste facility shortly after it closed for the evening on Monday, May 22.
The cause of the fire has yet to be determined, but with assistance from state and local agencies, work is ongoing to mitigate any and all issues within the county’s control.

The “Coveting Lovingkindness” book signing at the Montgomery Public Library on Saturday, April 29 brought together some local historians, people known to the family and some of the remaining family of the subject of the book, Father Valerian Schatz.
Author Dean Caldwell-Tautges spoke to the group and took questions from those in attendance before and after reading one passage from the book. Caldwell-Tautges highlighted that the story was based on facts and filled in with fiction.
