Rochester Mayo, the 14th ranked team in Class AAAA, ended one of the best seasons for the New Prague girls’ basketball team.
The Spartans edged the Trojans, 33-30, Saturday, Feb. 29 in the Section 1AAAA Semifinals.
“This was a hard game to swallow. We didn’t shoot it well, but wow, did we defend our tails off with a lot of toughness,” New Prague head coach Luke Swedberg said. “We had our chances until the final horn went off. That is kind of what has always defined who this group is...toughness.”

The New Prague Adapted Floor Hockey team continued its unbeaten winter season with a pair of wins last week.
The Trojans defeated South Suburban, 11-1, Tuesday, Feb. 18 and Winona, 13-1, Thursday, Feb. 20.
In the win over South Suburban, Dylan Raaen scored five goals, Leo Fahey scored three goals, and Mathew Boike added two goals.
Garrett Gagner had four assists and Seth Dorner had three assists.

The New Prague boys’ basketball team dropped a pair of Wright County Conference East Division games last week.
The Trojans record fell to 1-8 in the WCC and 5-18 overall with a 54-53 loss to Holy Family Feb. 18 and a 69-56 loss to Waconia Feb. 21.
In the loss to Holy Family, it was a tale of two halves.
The Fire led 32-20 at halftime but were outscored 33- 22 in the second half.

Fourteen New Prague wrestlers competed in the Section 2AAA Tournament Friday, Feb. 21 and Saturday, Feb. 22.
Every wrestler finished in the top four of their respective weight classes. Seven of those advanced to State.
“It was a great weekend of wrestling. This is the best the team has wrestled collectively all season long,” Trojan head coach Dan Wagner said. “The depth of our talent showed this weekend as we had all 14 wrestlers place in the top 4. We had four champions and three second place finishers. Going into the tournament we only had two wrestlers seeded number 1.”

Thomas Eckstein scored a game-high 14 points for the New Prague basketball team in a 55-43 loss to Orono Friday, Feb. 14.
The Trojans were without their leading scorer, Parker Johnson, who sat out the game with a back injury. He is averaging more than 20 points per game this season and is within less 100 points of 1,000 career points.
“We played well throughout the first half on both ends of the floor,” Trojan head coach Dan Peterka said. “We worked our offense and found some good scoring opportunities throughout the first half.”

For the majority of the season, New Prague and Shakopee were considered two of the top teams in Class AAA wrestling.
Shakopee is the defending Class AAA State Champions and the Trojans were rated 4th all season.
It was inevitable the two teams would battle for the Section 2AAA championship Friday, Feb. 14 in Shakopee.
After winning their opening two matches, the two elite teams did advance to the finals.
New Prague opened the tourney with a 62-9 win over Apple Valley. This was the first time in program history they have defeated the Eagles.

New Prague senior Emily Russo was named one of 40 Minnesota seniors as a finalist for the honor of Miss Basketball.
Russo, who has scored close to 1,600 points and has more than 800 rebounds, joins a number of local players as a finalist.
Gus Boyer of Waseca, Sarah Conlon of St. Peter, Annie Guentzel of Lakeville South, Lauren Jensen of Lakeville North, Mackenzie Kramer of St. Michael-Albertville, and Molly Mogensen of Farmington are among the finalists.

A huge second half comeback came up just short Friday, Feb. 7 for the New Prague basketball team.
The Trojans trailed 30-19 at halftime and fell behind by as many as 18 points before pulling to within three against Hutchinson.
The Tigers held on, defeating the Trojans, 54-50 in a Wright County East Division game.
“We dug ourselves a hole going down by as many as 18 in the second half,” Trojan head coach Dan Peterka said. “We battled back and gave ourselves a chance down the stretch, but we couldn’t get it done.”

The New Prague boys hockey team scored three goals in a span of 70 seconds in a 4-2 win over Mound Westonka Friday, Feb. 7.
After the two teams battled to a scoreless first period, the Trojans scored goals at the 4:43, 5:03, and 5:53 mark of the second period.
Jake Lee scored his team-leading 15th goal. Xavier Emerson scored his 5th goal. Jack Wilmes scored his 5th goal on assists from Aiden Dorzinski, his 6th, and Spencer Tupy, his 2nd of the season.

It took one of the top teams in the state to end the double digit winning streak of the New Prague girls basketball team.
St. Michael-Albertville, ranked 7th in Class AAAA, defeated the Trojans, rated 18th in Class AAAA, 66-63 Saturday, Feb. 8.
The loss snapped a 10 game Trojan winning streak. The last time they were defeated was Dec. 28.

The New Prague gymnastics team put together their top team performance of the year Thursday, Jan. 23.
The Trojans scored 141.625 to defeat Annadale (136.875).
This was the third time the team has eclipsed the 140 point mark but the first over 141.
Not only did they record their season high team score, but they also finished with scores better than their team average in all four individual events.
Annandale’s Becca Green averaged 9.5 on her four events, finishing with an all-around score of 38.050.

Balanced scoring helped the New Prague girls basketball team win a pair of games last week, stretching their winning streak to six straight.
The Trojans had five players score nine points or more in a 68-43 nonconference win over Bloomington Jefferson.
Six different players scored eight points or more in a 69-58 win over Holy Family Friday, Jan. 24.

The New Prague adapted floor hockey team has started its 2020 season with four straight wins.
The Trojans defeated South Suburban, 10-2, Jan. 23. They defeated South Washington County (9-7), Burnsville/Lakeville/Farmington (BLF) (7-1), and Owatonna (16-1) last week.
Against South Suburban, Dylan Raaen had five goals and two assists. Leo Fahey had two goals and two assists.

Battling hard paid off for the New Prague Youth Traveling Team on Sunday, Jan. 12. The team took home the first place trophy for the K-3 tournament in Moundsview at the Iron Mustangs tournament.
Their first match was against Stillwater and was won by one point. New Prague battled for 40 points, while Stillwater ended with 39 points.
The second team New Prague took on was Moundsview. New Prague was again victorious with 73 points to the 12 points from Moundsview.

The New Prague wrestling team won its 18th straight dual meet Thursday, Jan. 16, defeating Waconia 44-20.
The Trojans, ranked 4th in Class AAA, defeated the No. 20AAA ranked Wildcats by winning 10 of the 14 matches wrestled.
In a match-up of top 10 rate wrestlers, William Busch (4th-195AAA) edged Bram Fitzsimmonds (#6-195AAA) by a 3-2 decision.
